THE ISSUE
Rapid growth in Comal County has led to rising rents, and less obtainable housing options for many in our community. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s 2024 Out of Reach report, a minimum-wage worker in Comal County would need to work 159 hours a week—or earn at least $28.87 per hour— to afford a basic two-bedroom without being cost-burdened.
Alarmingly, recent data from the annual Point in Time count, which surveys those experiencing homelessness, revealed a 64% increase in homelessness across Comal County between 2023 and 2024.
The Inspiration
The McKenna Foundation recognizes that homelessness stems from both community-related and individually-focused barriers. Since its founding, the Foundation has been committed to addressing these issues through strategic partnerships and targeted investments.
Recent funding directed toward NB Housing Partners’ First Footing Program is designed to expand bed capacity and provide comprehensive wraparound services–offering not just shelter, but a pathway to stability. The Foundation also supports homelessness prevention efforts through nonprofit partners who provide direct assistance to our neighbors, helping them avoid eviction, maintain utility service, and stabilize their households.
