THE ISSUE
In the greater New Braunfels area, approximately 27% of students are likely to be alone between 3 pm and 6 pm. Though afterschool programs are available for elementary-aged children, options for middle and high-school-aged children are scarce. With 43% of the local student population facing economic disadvantages and activity costs preventing 21.5% from participating, the need for accessible and affordable after-school programs for our youth is higher than ever.
A recent McKenna Foundation community survey indicated low satisfaction with youth enrichment and support services, underscoring the importance of these programs in ensuring safety, providing peace of mind for families, and fostering growth among our youth. Despite 70% of New Braunfels youth expressing interest in weekly after-school program participation, limited accessibility and high costs remain as obstacles for many of our neighbors.
- 94% OF SURVEYED STUDENTS IN COMAL COUNTY INDICATED THAT THEY WOULD USE A YOUTH CENTER
- 15.4% OF COMAL COUNTY STUDENTS DO NOT CURRENTLY PARTICIPATE IN ANY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
