THE ISSUE
Substance misuse continues to be a critical behavioral health concern in Comal County. For many, just a single crisis–such as the loss of a loved one, a financial setback, or an underlying mental health need–can become the tipping point that leads to addiction.
While the scope of those affected is difficult to quantify, the need is undeniable. In the 2025 fiscal year alone, RecoveryWerks! provided vital support to nearly 400 of our neighbors. RecoveryWerks! has also reported that 65% of their referrals came from local school districts and youth-serving professionals, underscoring the importance of early intervention and community-based care for Comal County youth.
The Inspiration
The McKenna Foundation recognizes that substance misuse is not an isolated issue. It is often intertwined with economic stress, unstable housing, limited access to treatment, and the stigma surrounding addiction.
In response, the Foundation is committed to supporting organizations like RecoveryWerks!, which works tirelessly to address the need by offering education, counseling, advocacy, and support for individuals and families navigating the challenges of substance misuse.
